History of Mount Joy

Mount Joy was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in the 1700s. The history behind the town’s name is very meaningful to those who settled there. It comes from the infamous supply ship, The Mountjoy. The ship was sent by King William in 1689 in an effort to liberate the Scots in Londonderry from the Jacobite Army of King James II. The Mountjoy was the first of three ships to break through the barrier that was blocking access to the city and bring much-needed supplies to the starving citizens of Londonderry.

When the region was initially laid out and divided in the early 1800s, it was rather confusing. There were multiple villages with similar variations of the same two names. Luckily, in 1851, the two main villages of Richland and Mount Joy along with the smaller villages all combined to make the incorporated Borough of Mount Joy. Much of the architecture that was built over the next century, following the town’s incorporation, is still standing today.
