History of East Petersburg

What is now known as the Borough of East Petersburg was once an expanse of farmland with a few grist mills scattered along its water sources. This changed after the Revolutionary War, as former soldiers and mercenaries began to settle in the area. While this small town dates back to revolutionary times, it was not technically established as a borough until 1946. A borough is a “self-governing municipal entity,” the key word in this definition being municipal for the following reason: Back in the 1940s, there was an outbreak of typhoid fever in the area. This was found to have been due to the location of the town’s water source. In order to solve this problem, a committee was formed to get East Petersburg incorporated as a borough. This allowed for the creation of a municipal water source that would guarantee clean water and healthy citizens. The committee that made all this possible was comprised of Melvin Binkley, who would become the town’s first mayor, Harry Ober, and Virgil Spencer, who would later be appointed the town’s first council president. Their actions set the groundwork for the thriving little town we know and love today.

Fun Facts About East Petersburg

  1. While East Petersburg does not currently have any directional counterparts, it was once one of several cities with the name Petersburg. It obtained its directional prefix in 1880 with the introduction of its railroad station.
  2. The East Petersburg railroad station was dismantled and moved to Strasburg in 1960. The original sign still hangs at the entrance, now reading “East Strasburg”.
  3. Many former Hessian soldiers used by the British in the Revolutionary War ended up settling in what is present-day East Petersburg. While these former soldiers and their cultural practices were of German descent, they were labeled as “Pennsylvania Dutch”. This misinformed label stemmed from the word Deitsch, the endonym used by the Pennsylvania Germans when referring to their community.
  4. In the years immediately following the revolutionary war, a Hessian mercenary, named Christian Strenge, settled in the area that is now known as East Petersburg. Strenge is famous for the colorful Frakturs, a form of German folk art, that he created in the 1780s. His art is still sought after by collectors today and on display in many museums across the nation.
  5. Thomas Herr, a professional baseball player who played for multiple major league teams, spent his childhood along Miller Road in East Petersburg.
